the-killerton-sweet-chestnutEast Devon Tree Care have carried out works in and around Devon for The Woodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity.

As keen supporters of conservation, we thought we’d highlight a fascinating project on their website dedicated solely to the discovery and recording of ancient trees throughout Great Britain - The Ancient Tree Hunt.

The Ancient Tree Hunt (ATH) involves thousands of people in finding and mapping all the fat, old trees across the UK and is right at the heart of the Woodland Trust’s ancient tree conservation work. It will create a comprehensive living database of ancient trees and it’s the first step towards cherishing and caring for them.

The ATH began in 2004, as a joint venture with the Tree Register of the British Isles and the Ancient Tree Forum, and has already collected more than 25,000 records. Thanks to additional funding from The Heritage Lottery Fund and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and, with your help and the assistance of many partner organisations, they aim to record at least 100,000 ancient trees throughout the UK by 2011.

The Ancient tree forum tree hunt is now on so why not help with this worthwhile project and identify ancient trees and get them protected for future generations?  You can even use their interactive map to discover ancient trees near you - much like the Sweet Chestnut at Killerton House & Gardens, a National Trust estate in Devon for whom we also carry out contracting work.
